In this presentation, Diana will discuss the role of The Foundation and the contributions that The Massage Therapy Foundation and massage therapists are making in the community. You will learn how you as a student or practitioner can participate in research case report contests and You will discover the latest trends and findings in current research and hear reports from one grant recipient at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL. ***SHEILA WANG PRESENTS: Along with other integrative medicine therapies, massage therapy is not typically included in standard medical care in hospitals. Why not? This presentation will explore the kind of research that will be necessary to support the inclusion of massage therapy in standard medical practice in hospitals. It will also cover the unique factors involved in carrying out massage therapy research in a pediatric hospital setting.
Diana, a massage therapist for over 30 years, practices in Seattle, treating acute and chronic pain disorders. Diana is the former President of the Massage Therapy Foundation and has received many awards, including the President’s Award, AMTA; Massage Therapist of the Year, One Concept; and Humanitarian of the Year, Performance Health. Her newest endeavor, Hands Heal Electronic Health Record, turns her book, Hands Heal: Communication, Documentation and Insurance Billing for Manual Therapists, into an online charting system. Diana also has a new book, Integrative Pain Management: Massage, Movement, and Mindfulness Based Approaches, published in 2016.
Sheila is the Director of Research for the Judith Nan Joy Integrative Medicine Initiative at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. Dr. Wang, a licensed massage therapist, co-authored a chapter in the textbook, Integrative Pediatrics, part of the Weil Integrative Medicine Library series. The Integrative Medicine program at Children's Memorial Hospital has been featured in Alternative and Complementary Therapies and in US News & World Report.
