A Conversation with Ruth Werner
Ruth Werner is an icon in the massage field. She is the author of A Massage Therapist’s Guide to Pathology, and Disease Handbook for Massage Therapists, and is also a columnist for Massage & Bodywork Magazine. She has served the Massage Therapy Foundation since 2007, first as a trustee and then as president. In this behind-the-scenes session, Ruth shares with Massage & Bodywork magazine Editor in Chief, Leslie Young, the evolution of her ideas, the questions that keep her curious, and the formative moments in her life and career.
Ruth Werner is a retired massage therapist, writer, and educator with a passionate interest in massage research and the role of bodywork for people who struggle with health issues. Her groundbreaking textbook, A Massage Therapist’s Guide to Pathology was first published in 1998. She writes for Massage and Bodywork magazine and teaches across the USA. She has served on committees for the Utah Department of Public Licensing, the AMTA, NCBTMB, and the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards. In 2005 she was selected for the AMTA Teacher of the Year Award.
Leslie Young is Vice President Communication for Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals and Editor-in-Chief of Massage & Bodywork magazine. She's also a volunteer Trustee and Development Chair for the Massage Therapy Foundation. She holds a master's degree and doctorate from the University of Utah in Communication and came to ABMP in 2002 after 12 years with the Rocky Mountain News in Denver. In her spare time Leslie enjoys horseback riding, scuba diving, and international travel.
