Teaching Research Literacy
with Ruth Werner

The past several years have seen an explosion of high-level research into various aspects of massage therapy and bodywork. Yet most massage therapists don’t have the skills to actively analyze and evaluate a typical research article, much less participate in a project or take a leadership role in asking an important research question. One of the obstacles to promoting research literacy among massage therapists is a sense of a lack of expertise in this field among massage school faculty: if teachers don’t feel prepared to discuss this topic, it is not surprising that their students don’t feel called to explore it either. This class focuses on increasing research literacy competence and confidence among all types of massage school faculty. We will provide strategies that will weave research literacy into already-existing massage education programs; we will provide examples of information that is currently available and relevant to students and teachers; we will explore how teachers and students can apply findings to their hands-on work; and we will support educators to promote participation in the Massage Therapy Foundation's Student Case Report Contest.

Ethics Education (Pre-Recorded)
with Cidalia Paiva

Ethics education is important because the people massage therapists as health care professionals have been entrusted to care for are important, very important. We have to remember that our clients are very often vulnerable people who need and trust us to be ethical and accountable in serving their health and well-being. We also need to remember that as healthcare professionals we have made a professional commitment which I refer to as a "professional promise" to our clients in particular and to society in general to behave ethically. But how can we keep this commitment or promise to society if we are not educated and informed in ethics? Our dialogue on ethics education will focus on several key questions that ethics educators need to consider and address. These questions include; what should ethics education really be about? What are some of the basic concepts, distinctions and principles we need to teach in ethics education? What is the relationship between law and Ethics? How can we motivate as opposed to inform our students to behave ethically and to make their personal and professional integrity an important part of their ethical development. Finally what should we be doing in ethics education in the future? What are some of our next steps in terms of professional growth in terms of ethics education?

Integral Anatomy: The Essence of a Layered Approach
with Gil Hedley

Gil will present and discuss the foundations of integral anatomy, supporting this unique perspective using images from the dissection laboratory. Every bodyworker touches the whole body and the whole person, but very few have seen what they are touching under the skin. This presentation offers an anatomical perspective coherent with the experience of massage therapists and other bodyworkers who have felt the whole body and the continuity of layers, but have never seen them presented in anatomy books, which tend to emphasize regions and the rendering of discreet anatomical "parts." In this presentation you can see the whole, and experience the transformative power of that perspective.
