A Holistic Approach to Effective Injury Prevention for Massage TherapistsIn these tough economic times, protecting one’s livelihood as a massage therapist by learning how to prevent injury is more important than ever. Research has shown that massage practitioners have a high risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) due to the physical demands of their work. MSDs and their symptoms can have both short and long-term effects on a therapist’s ability to maintain their normal workload, advance in their career and, in some cases, even remain in their profession. Yet injury is NOT inevitable; in fact, there is a great deal that massage therapists can do to prevent these injuries from occurring, and to lessen the impact of injury on their careers if it does occur despite their best efforts. Since multiple factors are involved in causing injury, a successful prevention strategy must be holistic and multifaceted, combining a number of tactics to address all potential causes. In this seminar, participants will gain awareness of the risk factors for injury in their work and how to reduce their exposure to those risk factors using the principles of ergonomics. They will then learn the most important aspects of a holistic approach to injury prevention, including: • Designing their workspace to increase practitioner safety and comfort • Using good body mechanics to reduce stress and effort • Staying in shape with a physical conditioning program that addresses the specific needs of massage therapists • Taking care of their general health, to promote healing and overall wellness • Paying attention to emotions that can affect their work and increase injury risk • Recognizing warning signs and symptoms and treating them effectively before they lead to injury At the end of the seminar, participants will be encouraged to develop their own personalized injury prevention strategy, using the information provided and adapting it to their own bodies and situation. |

A Practical Guide to Therapist Self Care ToolsA therapist is a healer. Instead of chemicals and drugs, a therapist uses their hands, mind, body and spirit to bring about positive, healthy change within the client. Just as surgeons, mechanics, and building contractors must spend time on the maintenance of the tools they use, so must a massage therapist. In giving so much of ones self in the care and healing of others, it would stand to reason therapists must take proper care of the tools they use. In this presentation, we will look at ways you can utilize to better your chances of caring for your most important piece of equipment…YOU! |
